My college experience so far: a recap.
So here I am, going off to college away from almost everyone I know in a town most people have never heard of. The way Acting Directing majors work is that we have to audition for both productions each semester (including musicals) So I put up a valiant effort for Schoolhouse Rock Live! and the director gave me the compliment "you got through it!", which was better than I thought it would be. My monologue audition for the other production, Hay Fever, went quite a bit better. In fact, I made it to callbacks (rare for a freshman) and subsequently, to my amazement, got a part (woo!). So I picked up my shiny new script, and began preparing for rehearsals in October.
Then I began my first week of classes, sprinkled with some cool events the school had set up for "stampede week". The classes had yet to contain any content, and all consisted of pretty much just reading syllabuses (syllabi?). but one night I decided that I was going to go see one of the events, "Magician/Comedian Derek Hughes". It was a great act, I got called on in the audience (awesome!) though I didn't get to go up on stage, I participated in a trick. I also discovered that college students get really riled up when they see magic tricks. After the show, a group of people stayed and were treated to a few more cool tricks. I got his autograph, and when he found out my major, he also gave me some advice. My plan originally had been to stick around Denver after graduation so I could save some money and get some experience. He advised me to get out there as soon as possible "Youth is an asset." he said. "If you want to build cars, you go to Detroit, right?"
I had quite a bit of fun in my Voice and Diction class, in which our first assignment was to write a two page paper on ourselves, so that we could get a baseline for speech improvement. Mine included a funny story involving my first stage kiss (awkward). A good friend of mine (who I'll call CoCo) wrote his about the time he almost died while longboarding, but was saved by his helmet. Yet another person in the class (let's call Ace) told about a white elephant party in the military while on a generals staff. (lets just say that his gift ended up with the general, and he was placed on the front lines not long after. He seems like a fascinating fellow, whom I've had, and intend to have more, conversations with)
For my required kinesics class, I decided on something unorthodox, fencing. A sport that I have discovered is entirely about drilling, practicing, and sweating. My thigh and butt muscles were on fire after the first class, and the gear doesn't help the pure exhaustion factor.
This is running a bit long, so I'll say this is

The first weeks of the rest of my life.
My name is Alex, and I'm a college student. Why did I decide to make a blog? was it because I am particularly insightful? not really. Do I have an inflated sense of self importance? a bit, yeah. But the truth is that it's for me. Week 2, and I've learned, experienced, and grown as a person in ways I had no idea. I want to share this amazing experience, and so here I am.
Let me tell you about myself. I am an Acting/Directing major at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO (i.e. mightaswellbeUtah, USA) I intend to someday become a professional actor.
So, I will post once a day to detail my experiences, conversations, and anything else noteworthy. It will be a fun ride, and I will enjoy documenting one of the most exciting times in my life.
Welcome aboard.
